In a world in which immobility and rigidity are the norm, Giulia Manset and Yuichiro Moriyama‘s works shown in this exhibit, Suspension, at the Galerie Virginie Louvet, reveal subtle sceneries and elusive or abstract environments. These gentle wintery or spring-like vistas disclosed before our eyes, creations caught between concrete and abstract realms, stir up a volatile expectation.

The feeling of suspension suggested by the dots left on Yuichiro Moriyama’s canvas, the sense of the mere touch of the brush, are reminiscent of themes and views dear to Postimpressionist painters, while the felt tip marks of Giulia Manset on photographs have something of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Nets.

The parallel between painting and photography, under Japanese influence, is present through the poetic nature of the works, the fantasy of the compositions, and the tangential balance of a suspended imaginary environment. These sceneries are a fine illustration of their Japanese influence: spaces all at once frozen, fluctuating, diaphanous.

The works exhibited here show an expressive intent that invites us, confronted with the flimsy frivolousness of the touch, to open ourselves to a whiff of emotions. The suspension is sustained by the sensitive, solitary feeling artists are liable to experience before their work, when the suspended touch of the brush draws them to progress with suspension points as in a sort of gestural wavering.

Yuichiro Moriyama was born in 1984 in Kumamoto, Japan. He lives and works in Paris.

Giulia Manset was born in 1986 in Paris, France. She lives and works in Paris.
