As Long as It Lasts
Opening : Saturday 11 April 2015 from 3pm to 8pm
Exhibit : 11 April – 6 June 2015
Galerie Virginie Louvet is happy to present Marion Charlet’s first personal exhibit.
To borrow Chagall’s expression, Marion Charlet’s paintings are “like a window through which one could fly away to another world.”
In this new series of paintings, all made in the course of the last twelve months, the artist confronts large canvasses, using her technique with patience and precision.
With the meticulousness of an architect, she blends photographic inspirations, personal experiences, dreamlike elements and her love of nature to produce polymorphous, thoroughly self-contained compositions in which the connection between man and nature is constantly in question. Using a chromatic palette where cold, candy colors dominate, Marion Charlet invents spaces that can be neither identified nor situated in time.
By blurring boundaries, “As Long as It Lasts” speaks of timelessness but also of ambivalent seduction. If the general atmosphere of Marion Charlet’s paintings is at first glance serene, we soon distinguish a muffled rumbling. Indeed, the animals seem stuffed rather than alive, the perspective almost shifting and the cold magnificence of the sky slightly menacing. Upon closer scrutiny, everything seems just a little too beautiful to be true. This built-in contradiction truly calls upon our imagination and gives free rein to our own interpretation, as in a journey of initiation.
Creating a powerful narrative dialogue, Marion Charlet’s paintings purposefully enter into resonance and mutual echo. Playing on this artificial ambiguity – a sanctuary set up in the immensity of space, a feeling of emptiness issued from our human experience – the artist inspires a doubtful, unsteady feeling, a mysteriousness we are eager to solve. “The places I reveal are at once rigid by their geometry and soft by the movement of the landscapes that manifest in them.” By her treatment of this surreal reality, Marion Charlet suspends all temporality, flirting with a form of eternal beauty that memory alone can make visible.
Marion Charlet was born in 1982. She lives and works in Brussels.
