Art is always the result of a constraint. Believing it rises all the higher the freer it is, is like believing what prevents the kite from going higher is its string. André Gide
For her second solo show at the gallery, Janaina Mello Landini presents, with her Aglomeração series, a new body of work from her ongoing Ciclotrama series started in 2010, succeding to the Impregnação series.
Using her preferred materials, nylon or cotton strings that she carefully unravels until she reaches the finest possible thread, she creates organic or vegetal shapes which she embroiders onto her canvas.
The idea is to “unstitch” time from the inside, unraveling the threads of the same rope in constant bifurcations, until she reaches the last, indivisible stage, a point that holds everything together in perfect balance.
With the Impregnação series, the artist initiated the « weaving » – the ramifications developed in a logical and delicately apparent pattern. Currently, with the Aglomeração series, these same branches climb into each other, producing an outcome that flirts with the notion of a botanical « rhizome ». The organic quality of the tree formations remain, although now they resemble the organs of the body, taking the form of kidneys, the uterus, the heart, etc. The strings are no longer on the ground; they are thick and masterful. They come out of the canvas and tear the fabric like a skin. The canvas is no longer a blank sheet, it now adopts the natural color of linen, adding an extra perception and depth to the work.
The work thus becomes an ensemble of physical-tactile elements and its space-time feature is essential to establishing a relationship between the work and the viewer.
According to Efisio Carbone, “Her feelings spring forth out of the molded object. The absence of minimalist, geometric, rigid figures is evident. This is not programmed art but “action-art” that considers time as an unrepeatable and continually changing creative moment.”
Janaina Mello Landini was born in 1974 in São Gotardo, Brazil.
She lives and works in São Paulo.
After getting a diploma in architecture, Janaina Mello Landini went on to study physics and mathematics. Her work reflects this interest as well as her observation of the notion of time, while expressing her personal and poetic point of view, thus “weaving” her vision of the world.
Her work embraces a broad range of scales, from canvas size to more monumental pieces where the artist fills a given space with creations done in situ.
Since 2010, Janaina Mello Landini has had shows in Brazil, Latin America and in Europe.
Her work has been included in various exhibitions including the Palais de Tokyo in 2016 and at the Rijwijk Textile Biennial in Holland in 2017.
In 2018, her work was exhibited at Centquatre-Paris as part of the BIC Collection.
Currently, one of her in situ installations from the Ciclotrama series is part of the Carmignac Foundation’s opening exhibition in Porquerolles, France.
